Abstract
In a world where convenience often outweighs consideration, where the aroma of fast-food indulgence masks the hidden costs to our health, many people conveniently ignore the pitfalls of the Western Diet. Ultra-processed foods, the cornerstone of this diet, are laden with artificial ingredients, excessive salt, and refined sugars. These foods not only undermine the body’s nutritional balance but also take a toll on mental stability and clarity, fostering conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease while fueling cognitive decline and exacerbating mental health disorders. However, a verdant field of information exists that offers a cure for the detrimental repercussions of the Western Diet – its antithesis, the Mediterranean Diet. This diet rich in whole, minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide the necessary nutrients for optimal brain function, energy levels, and overall well-being. My thesis explores the mechanisms behind these effects and highlights the importance of mindful eating and a balanced diet for maintaining a healthy mind and body while also bringing attention to the downfalls of UPFs on the mind and body.
